Doug "Scab" Alward
October 22, 1969 - July 6, 2009

Clinton County sheriff's deputy Doug Alward was riding his motorcycle on his way into work on U.S. 127 when he hit a deer at mile marker 83. He fell of his bike, and then was tragically hit by a semi-truck. Alward was survived by his wife and two young children.

Hundreds of police, sheriffs' deputies and motorcyclists gathered Thursday to say one final farewell to Doug. During the memorial service members of the Michigan Warthogs gave Alward's 8-year-old son, Dillon, his father's Warthogs vest and gave his 5-year-old daughter, Jordyn, a stuffed animal wearing motorcycle garb. Standing in front of a large American flag, the Naval Reserve color guard fired off a 21-gun salute and a bagpiper from the Sterling Heights Police Department played "Amazing Grace." Clinton County Sheriff Wayne Kangas presented Alward's wife, Alicen, with the American coffin flag.

Alward was a 10-year veteran with the Clinton County Sheriff's Department who had served on the special operations team, a narcotics squad and was currently a gun-range instructor. He began his law enforcement career with the Ingham County Sheriff's Office as a parks officer. He then worked for police departments in Ovid and DeWitt.
